In today’s modern data centers, you want a simple way to deal with your data, whether it’s in the public or private cloud. You also want to ensure that DR is easy to set up, always compliant and in sync, and ready to run as needed.
As you may know, the Automatrix platform converges primary storage + backup + disaster recovery + encryption + data mobility in a single end-to-end solution. The platform includes these products: DVX, Cloud DVX, and ControlShift.
In this blog post, we will take a look at how simple it is to deploy and operate ControlShift and Cloud DVX, as well as create Protection Groups and Disaster Recovery plans.
Part 1: How Datrium ControlShift and Cloud DVX are Deployed and Operated on AWS
AWS Access Keys
First, we need to generate an AWS access key to enable Datrium DVX to operate in your AWS account. This article explains step-by-step how to create a new secret access key. Where’s My Secret Access Key?
The next step is to register your DVX system with your AWS account and select the preferred AWS Region for the deployment. At this point, you will be asked for the AWS secret access key.
The entire process will take only a couple of minutes and your DVX system is now connected to the cloud, but no Datrium services are deployed yet. Today there are two services available to deploy as part of the Automatrix framework:
This is the long-term Cloud archiving repository that is capable of storing snapshots and backups of up to 10 DVX systems. All data is fully de-duplicated across all systems, and in fact, only unique data is uploaded to Cloud DVX.
This is another element of the Automatrix platform, offered as a SaaS solution, and it delivers full runbook DR orchestration with failover and fail-back for site-to-site and site-to-cloud.
The Cloud DVX and ControlShift services are independent of each other, but may also work together.

The next step is to deploy Cloud DVX and have a quick look at the ControlShift UI. Cloud DVX can be used to fail over an environment from long-term archiving in the cloud to your DR data center, or it can simply act as your organization’s backup.

The last bit of the video briefly goes over the ControlShift UI, and that’s the topic of the next section. We will dive into the world of creating Protection Groups and Disaster Recovery Plans – and of course testing and executing them.
Part 2: From Zero to Instant Orchestrated DR in 6 seconds. Live!
Now, I will discuss the DR plan configuration, the failover, and the failback of VMware VMs between data centers and vCenters.
The video below demonstrates how you can use ControlShift to create, test, and execute seamless orchestrated Disaster Recovery for all your VMware environments.
The video is 10 minutes in total, and that is all it took me to create, test, and fail over a VM to my secondary site. The plan execution itself took only 6 seconds (RTO).

Next, I will explain how to get live VMs on the DR site replicating back to the primary site without re-seeding the entire dataset and how to execute the failback plan.
Part 3: Seamless Orchestrated VM Failback from DR Site
In this section, I will demo the unique DR Failback between data centers and vCenters. It is important to highlight that many solutions provide orchestrated failover, but failback is the tough part and where most fail. See for yourself how Datrium handles it beautifully!
