Multi-Cloud versus the Five Requirements of Data – Datrium Briefing Note

Organizations need to meet five core requirements of the data they store; encryption, mobility, performance, retention and disaster recovery. To deliver these elements, IT is often forced to use five or more products just for on-premises data, let alone the cloud. Once cloud providers are added to the IT strategy the problem gets more complicated – The same 5 functions are needed, but they are implemented and managed differently. An organization with data on-premises and in just two cloud providers may have to manage 15 or more products to meet the core requirements of data. Datrium’s Automatrix Platform promises to simplify the multi-cloud problem by reducing it to a single solution.

The real-world challenges of cloud-based DR orchestration

Legacy storage protection architectures rely on tiers of specialised primary and secondary storage appliances and accompanying backup software. In many scenarios, disaster recovery (DR) needs can only be addressed through separate dedicated DR orchestration software. While these architectures have evolved during the client-server era, they present RPO/RTO, resource utilisation and risk mitigation challenges for modern hybrid cloud environments. In exploring these challenges, it becomes clear that these siloed products -- from multiple vendors with inherent operational complexity – need integration. In this article, we will take a closer look at the challenges organisations face and the advantages of cloud-based DR orchestration services.

Definition of hyper-converged infrastructure evolves, as do products

HCI continues to evolve, however, as new players come in and expand the category. That's why a recent SearchConvergedInfrastructure.com buyer's guide article gave a general definition of hyper-converged infrastructure, describing it as a "data center architecture that either loosely or tightly couples servers, storage and a hypervisor." This opens the door for newcomers such as NetApp HCI and Datrium DVX, which don't tightly integrate servers and storage in one box. There is also Microsoft Azure Stack, which brings Microsoft software-defined storage and Azure Stack storage services into an on-premises configuration.

Modern Data Protection Summary

Data has become the most important asset within the enterprise. As an asset class, enterprise IT receives the burden of protecting the asset ensuring it remains available and accessible. Also, as an asset the ability to allocate and move data around becomes critical. Data has gravity which means it’s difficult to move the asset where needed as quickly as monetary assets.

Data protection products have evolved from the backup category to a category that enables the protection and mobility of data. This report will examine the essential functions of modern-day data protection products and provide context to the relationship between data protection and data management.

How 49ers want to leverage hosting football’s second biggest event

The significance of next January’s college football championship game at Levi’s Stadium varies greatly depending on whether you’re an alumnus of a school with a chance to play in it, a casual sports fan, someone who lives nearby or far away, or someone with a business interest that the game could possibly scratch.

But because the number of people for whom the game has some significance has exploded in a mere four years of existence into the second most-watched football game of the year, the San Francisco 49ers, who host it as operator of the stadium in Santa Clara, are making the maximum effort to capitalize on the unique opportunity.

“It’s really a celebration of college football,” said Brent Schoeb, the team’s sponsorship chief.

But really, it’s a bit more than that.

The championships are also a chance to boost the game of football, the team’s core business and one that has taken some dings from injury concerns and participation decline at its entry levels, to boost the two other college games hosted by Levi’s, and to establish a stronger reputation as a venue where the biggest stuff in the sports and entertainment worlds happens on a regular basis.

After the Super Bowl of two years ago, the stadium’s biggest moment in the spotlight, the College Football Playoff National Championship on Jan. 7 will become next on the list with its own host committee and sponsorship packages designed to build out business relationships that will further growth down the road.

Datrium, the Sunnyvale-based cloud data storage company that’s already a 49ers’ vendor, bought the first “Community Founding Partners” deal earlier this week for what Schoeb said was a mid-six figure price.

It will include a suite at the game as well as a presence at preliminary events the week prior and participation in the “Extra Yard for Teachers” program launching tomorrow to celebrate and reward educators.

“This isn’t just a round of golf,” said Craig Nunes, Datrium’s marketing vice president.

The 49ers are using the championship game to entice companies like Datrium to sign on to one or both the other college football games at Levi’s in a six-week period beginning Nov. 30. That’s when the Pacific-12 Conference plays its championship there and then Dec. 31, when the 17th iteration of the San Francisco Bowl will be played. That game’s sponsorship with Foster Farms ended last season.

There is no mandate that a deal for the Jan. 7 college championship include one of the others but “as we are talking college football national championship game to everybody in the marketplace, we're obviously talking to them about our bowl game and Pac-12 championship as well,” Schoeb said. “Whether that's on the corporate partnership side or just the premium hospitality side, it gives us leverage in the marketplace just to bring more visibility across to that entire season early December to early January.”

But No. 1, the 49ers believe, is creating corporate relationships for the host committee it created for the college championship. The committee is not intended to die, as host committees of one-off events usually do, because the team intends it to live on under new names future big events like Super Bowls and soccer’s World Cup.

If the stadium can deliver on bringing even bigger events in the future, it will have an existing partnership base from which to generate even more support.

“Forty-Niners football is our core business, but don’t forget that any non-NFL event — which is concerts, which is soccer, which is college football — that is all stadium authority revenue,” which is shared with the City of Santa Clara, said Roger Hacker, the team’s head of corporate communications.

Convergence Without Compromise

Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI) gets a lot of attention these days, and rightly so. With HCI we’ve seen a move towards an easy-to-use, pay-as-you-grow approach to the datacenter that was previously missing. Complex storage array that required you to purchase all your capacity up front is what I started with in my career. While expansion of these storage arrays was possible, often times we were buying all the storage we’d need for 3-5 years even though we wouldn’t be consuming it for multiple years.

Blockchain in the Enterprise, Beyond the Utter Spin

Awhile ago I wrote a frustrated post after being pitched some blockchain-enriched solutions. Blockchain fashion show, blockchain toothpaste, blockchain animal supplements, it seems everything that can be sold, is a candidate for blockchainization.

The pity about this all is that the buzzwords and opportunistic use of blockchain for situations in which it (arguably) has no place to be used, reduce the impact of situations where blockchain can absolutely add value. One of the companies that I’m involved with, 1Centre is in the business of making business-to-business trade occur more easily. For 1Centre, Blockchain absolutely is a relevant and applicable technology.

HCI/Not HCI – It Doesn’t Matter

I'm going to share a secret; IT is really difficult to manage and deliver. Technology wants to be freed and consumed smoothly by the end users. SaaS solutions prove that when you make technology simple, it will be employed at scale directly by end users. Converged infrastructures (CI) and hyperconverged infrastructures (HCI) both aim at the simplification of IT. Both, for the most part, fail in large organizations as the problem is rarely technology.

Nuancing the Management of HCI Deployments

When one examines enterprise data protection and data storage products through the lens of hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) designs, one would think each product either supports an HCI architecture or it does not. But as one begins to see when one scrutinizes this topic, the answer is not a simple “Yes” or “No”. Nuancing how well or if a product fits into an HCI design, one first needs to think about the question or even the series of questions that he or she should ask to properly make this assessment.

Hyperconverged for the Enterprise and the Cloud – Datrium Amazon Product Briefing

Converging compute, storage and networking into a single tier sounds good at first but as the architecture scales and tries to extend into the cloud, problems arise. Most hyperconverged infrastructures are “over-converged.” In most cases, the lowest common denominator is the node, and it comes with compute, storage and networking. But what if all the organization needs are more storage capacity or more storage performance? In most cases, it has to buy more of everything to get just the specific resource it needs. The lack of granularity makes it hard to push hyperconvergence into the enterprise or extend it into the cloud.

Datrium DVX with Flash End-to-End Review

Datrium delivers "open convergence," which is what they call the next generation of converged infrastructure. There may be as many riffs on convergence as there are vendors in the enterprise IT space, and for their part, Datrium isn't shy about promoting their vision of what infrastructure can look like. Datrium's view sees compute, primary storage, secondary storage and cloud coming together in a highly resilient configuration that is scalable and easy to manage without a silo for each class of storage. Furthermore, because most data calls will hit compute nodes with on-board flash cache, Datrium can deliver tremendous performance without having to go to the data nodes in nearly all cases. This translates to 200GB/s and 16GB/s in peak 32K read and write bandwidth and 18M IOPS 4K random read.

Exclusive Interview With Brian Biles, CEO and Co-Founder, Datrium

Datrium CEO and Co-Founder answers questions about Datrium.

StorageNewsletter: With Data Domain, you invented a new way to protect data with the now ubiquitous data reduction approach. And we know the story, Data Domain got acquired by EMC in 2009 for a significant transaction. With Datrium, it’s a new story again, changing some paradigms, could you share with us the genesis of the company?

Brian Biles: Datrium combined two CTO teams - the first two CTOs from Data Domain (one of whom designed SnapVault for NetApp, deduplication at Data Domain, and was later an EMC Fellow), and two principal engineers from the early days of VMware. We wanted to create the simplest converged infrastructure in the world. Early converged and hyperconverged infrastructures existed at that point, and even though they scored some points, they both had problems.

The solution for on-prem infrastructure in our mind was to mimic the roles of compute and flash on EC2, with persistence on S3, but make transitions and high efficiency automatic and always-on, eliminating the need for cluster settings and along the way, backup. It also lets hosts be stateless, so it eliminates the fragility of HCI hosts.

As it turns out, this also made it easier to port to AWS for hybrid cloud data management.

Sometimes it’s really easy to have too much of good thing. In a hyperconverged, scaled-out backup system, there can be numerous motherboards, multiple persistence drives and hardware duplicates as far as the eye can see. That’s why Brian Biles, co-founder and chief executive officer of Datrium Inc., looked for a storage solution that could bring order to the chaos, and in doing so he created something no one had quite seen before.

Optimizing cloud data management with its open convergence platform: Datrium Inc

Present day organizations generate massive amount of data that is critical for business operations. This has led to the rising demand of effective network storage technologies and online access to sensitive data while reducing the total cost of ownership. In response, companies are adopting networked storage to manage the continuous streams of data and perform actions on that data. To further reduce complexity and improve the operating costs of their business solutions, they adopt converged infrastructure approaches, where all the technology components are brought together as an integrated part of a single solution. This fundamental shift in infrastructure convergence, relating to private and hybrid cloud computing, was foreseen by the founders and early architects of Data Domain and VMware, and Datrium was established.

Object storage helps with ransomware protection

Datrium, announced the ability to deliver encryption for data at rest and for data in flight. Encrypting data on storage infrastructure offers benefits but has limitations. These technologies help protect data from physical theft of storage media or systems or access to the data when storage equipment is retired or discarded. Data in flight, meanwhile, helps protect information in the event someone attempts to sniff the network. Again, encryption is helpful but only one part of the protection equation.

The Datrium DVX converges storage and compute in a new way, called Open Convergence, to simplify webscale and tier 1 private cloud infrastructure deployments. It separates on-host, software-driven IO services and performance (compute nodes) from an off-host durable data repository (data node), so speed and persistent capacity can each be provisioned incrementally. It also provides always-on de-dupe and compression, erasure-coded data protection, data management and encryption. This combination of capabilities enable VM administrators to accelerate, backup, copy and recover VMs across their data lifecycle.

Enterprise Data Storage Vendor Roundup

DATA STORAGE STARTUPS
Many technology companies try to keep a startup label as long as they can. Why? Because “startup” has the cachet of being innovative, high-value, growth driven, and a bull’s-eye target for investment or acquisition. I believe that a company that calls itself a startup after five years and has billions of dollars in valuations (hello, Uber) is getting a little long in the tooth, and needs to graduate into mid-tier vendors.

The below vendors are all 5 years old or less, have innovative product, and show real promise for the long-term.

DATRIUM
2013 saw the founding of Datrium by one of VMware’s co-founders. The company came out of stealth mode and into the general storage market in 2016 with Datrium DVX. Datrium DVX is a split architecture that places storage functions on the server and supports persistent shared storage capacity on the backend.

Adding VM host cores scales IO performance up to 1 million IOPs and accelerates data services. Synchronous writes go through the Datrium NetShelf NAS, which allows for stateless servers and simplified storage management.
