DRaaS Offers Groundbreaking Capabilities in Disaster Recovery

10x More Cost-Efficient DR

Fail over to on-demand VMware Cloud on AWS SDDC targets using ControlShift DR plans and store forever incremental, native backups in S3. DR sites are ready when needed, in the cloud, whether for testing or actual failover. Pay for SDDC only when you need it while your data is ready to use on low-cost AWS S3. Efficiently fail back with minimal AWS egress charges by transferring only changed and globally deduplicated data. Select from a broad range of DR sites around the world.

Recover from Recent Snapshots or Old Backups

Easily recover from recent snapshots or backups from months or years ago. With converged backup and DR, you have millions of point-in-time consistent recovery points to choose from. This can be critical for ransomware attacks, which often only become apparent months after the initial event.

Failproof DR and Efficient Failback from Public Cloud

Achieve failproof DR. ControlShift automatically checks your plan for health and compliance every 30 minutes, so you can be confident your DR is going to work when you need it. Efficiently fail back with minimal AWS egress charges by transferring only changed and globally deduplicated data. Similar to failover, failback is fully automated.

Consistent Operating Environment On Premises and in the Cloud

Simplify the management of your on-premises and DR sites. Datrium DRaaS maintains VMs in their native vSphere format and eliminates the need for brittle and time-consuming VM disk format conversions. Manage both your cloud DR site and primary site with vCenter and retain access to familiar abstractions such as clusters, resource pools, data stores, virtual switches, and port groups following a failover.

Your Complete Solution

With Datrium DRaaS, you get a complete solution that delivers comprehensive support, simplified purchasing, and billing. Eliminate the cost and friction caused by multiple point solutions. You get everything you need for fail-proof on-demand DR to the public cloud in one solution.

We plan to quickly adopt Datrium DRaaS with VMware Cloud on AWS to further improve our business continuity now that on-demand cloud DR is an economic reality. The combination of primary, backup, and disaster recovery in a single system – with automated orchestration through ControlShift and cost-effective cloud backup through Cloud DVX – is unlike anything else in the industry today.

– Igor Zaika, IT Director, Sensiba San Filippo

Until now, DR has been more disaster than recovery. With Datrium DRaaS, VMware users finally have a true DR option that works automatically and on-demand, regardless of the complexity of their environment.

Cloud DVX

A cloud backup service that runs the Datrium DVX software and stores backups in S3 in a native compressed and deduplicated form.

A DR orchestration service that executes DR plans and provisions and monitors SDDCs in VMware Cloud on AWS.

Software-Defined Data Center, a Cloud DR Site provisioned on demand by ControlShift. SDDC provides a vSphere-based cloud execution environment for operational consistency.

What’s Happening Inside Datrium DRaaS

Datrium DRaaS provides “shared nothing” isolated secure cloud storage and compute environments with no cloud infrastructure sharing between customers. The AWS account hosts backup and DR orchestration services, and the VMware Cloud account hosts cloud DR targets.

Cloud DVX

Cloud DVX is a backup service that runs the Datrium DVX software and uses S3 as a repository of backups stored in a native compressed and deduplicated form. On-premises DVX systems send native forever incremental backups to Cloud DVX. Global Deduplication ensures that data is transferred only when needed. The built-in Datrium VPN ensures there are no transfer charges during backup.

ControlShift is a DR orchestration service that executes DR plans and provisions and monitors SDDCs in VMware Cloud on AWS. DR plans and states are stored in a highly-available Plan database replicated across multiple availability zones. Built-in self-healing ensures that, in the event of public cloud unavailability, all affected Datrium services automatically migrate to a healthy availability zone without any data loss.

VMware Cloud on AWS SDDC

VMware Cloud SDDC provides a vSphere-based execution environment for a cloud DR target. An SDDC can be provisioned on demand via ControlShift. A provisioned SDDC incurs hourly charges. Upon DR test completion, the SDDC can be decommissioned via the ControlShift UI. ControlShift performs automated network configurations for both AWS and VMware Cloud to make S3 backups available for spin-up in SDDC. The SDDC is managed via the familiar vCenter interface.

The system provides fully-automated failback from a cloud SDDC to on-premises data centers. Data changes that occur while executing in the cloud are captured and stored as a Cloud DVX snapshot in S3. ControlShift orchestrates the transfer back to the on-premises data center – which includes just the data that changed. Cloud egress charges are minimized by delta transfers, which occur only when deltas are not already present in the on-premises data center.

Compliance Checks and Reporting

Automatic Compliance Checks ensure DR plan integrity is in a steady state providing maximum assurance of a successful failover. ControlShift offers a variety of reports to satisfy DR readiness and audit requirements.

SaaS Delivery and Support

With autonomous deployment, configuration, maintenance, upgrades, and healing from component failures, you can focus on managing your data protection requirements. No manual on-premises software installation is required. Datrium monitors and supports all components of the system, including AWS and VMware Cloud, aided by Datrium partnerships with both companies.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I manage my cloud SDDC?

You will have access to a familiar vCenter interface to manage your cloud SDDC. Some SDDC settings and network configurations are managed via the ControlShift UI.

Can I mix prem-to-cloud and prem-to-prem DR plans within Datrium DRaaS?

Absolutely. Datrium DRaaS provides everything you need for both cloud and on-premises failovers. You can have many different DR plan types, and you can even execute multiple DR plans concurrently to recover some parts of your infrastructure to a cloud DR target and other parts to on-premises DR site(s).

Is failback from VMware Cloud supported?

Yes, Datrium DRaaS supports efficient orchestrated failback from VMware Cloud on AWS to on-premises data centers.

Can I decommission my SDDC to limit costs?

Yes, you can tear down your SDDC at any time via ControlShift UI. Please note that a new SDDC deployment can take about 90 minutes.

Do I need to purchase any other cloud service components to go with Datrium DRaaS?

No, Datrium DRaaS includes all software and service components for cloud backup and disaster recovery to public cloud.

Do I need to establish my own AWS and VMC accounts and deal directly with AWS and VMware to subscribe to Datrium DRaaS?

What is the support model for DRaaS?

DRaaS is offered as a cloud service with a single point of support. It includes managed cloud backup, on-demand SDDCs with VMware Cloud on AWS, and disaster recovery orchestration. These systems are monitored and maintained by Datrium Support.

How is the cloud service maintained and upgraded?

There is nothing to install, manage, or monitor in the cloud. The monitoring, maintenance, and upgrade of the services are performed by Datrium Support. These upgrades are performed with notifications ahead of time, like other enterprise SaaS services.

Can I run DR testing and do a production failover at any time by myself, or do I need help from Datrium support?

Datrium DRaaS is designed for self-service. You can perform DR testing or a production failover at any time without contacting Datrium support. You can also request Datrium assistance at any time, especially when faced with a real disaster recovery event.
