Production Sites

DRaaS with VMware Cloud on AWS protects DVX systems and can be extended to protect all VMware workloads running in the cloud and on premises using DRaaS Connect. That means VMware Cloud on AWS production SDDC sites, as well as vSphere environments running on traditional SAN, NAS, and HCI on premises, can be protected with failproof, on-demand DRaaS and instant RTO.

Datrium DRaaS Connect

DRaaS Connect is downloadable, lightweight software for any vSphere infrastructure that enables customers to protect VMs just minutes after downloading. DRaaS Connect for VMware Cloud enables DRaaS to orchestrate failover from a VMware Cloud SDDC in one AWS AZ to another AZ. DRaaS Connect for vSphere On Prem extends Datrium DRaaS to any vSphere on-premises infrastructure including SANs, NAS, HCI, and DHCI. Both DRaaS Connect options preserve all DRaaS features and will be available in Q1 2020.

Cloud DVX

Cloud DVX is a backup service that runs the Datrium DVX software and uses S3 as a repository of backups stored in a native compressed and deduplicated form. All protected vSphere environments send native forever-incremental backups to Cloud DVX. Global Deduplication ensures that data is transferred only when needed. The built-in Datrium VPN ensures there are no transfer charges during backup.

Failback

The system provides fully automated failback from a cloud SDDC to on-premises data centers or another AZ in VMware Cloud on AWS. Data changes that occur while executing in the cloud are captured and stored as a Cloud DVX snapshot in S3. ControlShift orchestrates the transfer back to the AZ or on-premises data center – which includes just the data that changed. Cloud egress charges are minimized by delta transfers, which occur only when deltas are not already present in the on-premises data center.

ControlShift

ControlShift is a DR orchestration service that executes DR plans and provisions and monitors SDDCs in VMware Cloud on AWS. DR plans and states are stored in a highly-available Plan database replicated across multiple availability zones. Built-in self-healing ensures that, in the event of public cloud unavailability, all affected Datrium services automatically migrate to a healthy availability zone without any data loss.

Automatic Compliance Checks ensure DR plan integrity is in a steady state providing maximum assurance of a successful failover. ControlShift offers a variety of reports to satisfy DR readiness and audit requirements.

VMware Cloud on AWS SDDC

VMware Cloud SDDC provides a vSphere-based execution environment for a cloud DR target. An SDDC can be provisioned on demand via ControlShift. A provisioned SDDC incurs hourly charges. Upon DR test completion, the SDDC can be decommissioned via the ControlShift UI. ControlShift performs automated network configurations for both AWS and VMware Cloud to make S3 backups available for spin-up in SDDC. The SDDC is managed via the familiar vCenter interface.

Can I mix prem-to-cloud, cloud-to-cloud, and prem-to-prem DR plans within Datrium DRaaS?

Absolutely. Datrium DRaaS provides everything you need for both cloud and on-premises failovers. You can have many different DR plan types, and you can even execute multiple DR plans concurrently to recover some parts of your infrastructure to a cloud DR target and other parts to cloud and on-premises DR sites.

How do I manage my cloud SDDC?

You will have access to a familiar vCenter interface to manage your cloud SDDC. Some SDDC settings and network configurations are managed via the ControlShift UI.

Is failback from VMware Cloud supported?

Yes, Datrium DRaaS supports efficient, orchestrated failback from VMware Cloud on AWS to on-premises data centers and VMware Cloud on AWS Availability Zones.

Can I decommission my SDDC to limit costs?

Yes, you can tear down your SDDC at any time via ControlShift UI. Please note that a new SDDC deployment can take about 90 minutes.

Do I need to establish my own AWS and VMC accounts and deal directly with AWS and VMware to subscribe to Datrium DRaaS?

No. Datrium DRaaS includes all required components. You don’t need to interact with any other vendors. You will get a single bill from Datrium, and Datrium will provide comprehensive support of all components including AWS and VMware Cloud.

Do I need to purchase any other cloud service components to go with DRaaS like DRaaS Connect?

No, Datrium DRaaS includes all software and service components for cloud backup and disaster recovery to the public cloud. If you're protecting non-DVX on-premises sites, you can request a no-cost feature called DRaaS Connect for vSphere On Prem. If you're protecting a VMware Cloud on AWS production environment, you can request a no-cost feature called DRaaS Connect for VMware Cloud. These features will be available in Q1 2020.

Support

How is the cloud service maintained and upgraded?

There is nothing to install, manage, or monitor in the cloud. The monitoring, maintenance, and upgrade of the services are performed by Datrium Support. These upgrades are performed with notifications ahead of time, like other enterprise SaaS services.

What is the support model for DRaaS?

DRaaS is offered as a cloud service with a single point of support. It includes managed cloud backup, on-demand SDDCs with VMware Cloud on AWS, and disaster recovery orchestration. These systems are monitored and maintained by Datrium Support.

Can I run DR testing and do a production failover at any time by myself, or do I need help from Datrium support?

Datrium DRaaS is designed for self-service. You can perform DR testing or a production failover at any time without contacting Datrium support. You can also request Datrium assistance at any time, especially when faced with a real disaster recovery event.
