What can I do with DVX?

How is DVX different from existing HCI and disaggregated HCI solutions?

DVX keeps data on host flash for lower latency performance while providing always-on data efficiency and resilience. What is Datrium DRaaS?

Datrium DRaaS is a comprehensive cloud disaster recovery and backup service for protection of VMware vSphere systems. It offers all Cloud Backup and ControlShift orchestration features as a managed service coupled with recovery to fully-managed VMware Cloud on AWS.

What are the sizing limitations for Datrium DRaaS?

Refer to the Cloud Backup FAQ for backup sizing limits. The cloud DR target is limited to a single cluster within an SDDC. Please refer to the VMware site to get Configuration Maximums for VMware Cloud on AWS for SDDC limits.

What if my deployed SDDC is insufficient for my DR testing or failover needs?

You can add more hosts to your SDDC via the ControlShift UI at any time to increase your SDDC storage, compute, and memory capacity within minutes, as long as you stay within the limits outlined above.

What are other system limits for Datrium DRaaS?

Please refer to the ControlShift User Guide, available on our Support Portal, for system limits information. Unless otherwise indicated, ControlShift system limits are the same for prem-to-prem and DRaaS use cases.

Can I mix prem-to-cloud, cloud-to-cloud, and prem-to-prem DR plans within Datrium DRaaS?

Absolutely. Datrium DRaaS provides everything you need for both cloud and on-premises failovers. You can have many different DR plan types, and you can even execute multiple DR plans concurrently to recover some parts of your infrastructure to a cloud DR target and other parts to cloud and on-premises DR sites.

How do I manage my cloud SDDC?

You will have access to a familiar vCenter interface to manage your cloud SDDC. Some SDDC settings and network configurations are managed via the ControlShift UI.

Is failback from VMware Cloud supported?

Yes, Datrium DRaaS supports efficient, orchestrated failback from VMware Cloud on AWS to on-premises data centers and VMware Cloud on AWS Availability Zones.

When executing failback, does Datrium DRaaS perform a full data copy from the public cloud similar to other vendors, which results in large cloud egress charges and long maintenance windows?

Absolutely not. ControlShift only transfers deltas incurred while executing in the public cloud and only when these deltas are not already present in cloud and on-premises data centers. The cloud egress charges are minimized, and failback is orders of magnitude faster relative to solutions that copy VMs over WAN in their entirety.

In which geographic regions can Datrium DRaaS be deployed?

Cloud Backup

What is Cloud Backup?

Cloud Backup is a Datrium backup service with backups stored in AWS S3 in a native compressed and deduplicated form.

How can I start using Cloud Backup?

You configure your on-premises system to replicate your backups to a Cloud Backup target in the public cloud, similar to how you replicate to another physical site. All backup features continue to work with Cloud Backup: restore of protection groups, restore of individual VMs, file restore, etc. Cloud Backup is automatically included in DRaaS and can be purchased independently for backing up Datrium DVX.

How is Cloud Backup different from Veeam backups to AWS?

Because Datrium unifies primary storage and backup, Cloud Backup backups are always native at the storage level with no rehydration or data transformation, even in the cloud. Global deduplication ensures that the minimum data set is transferred. That's not the case for standalone backup products.

What kind of data can be stored in Cloud Backup?

Cloud Backup provides an alternative easy-to-use cloud location for any backups.

What kind of dedupe ratio can I expect?

Because Cloud Backup runs a full copy of the Datrium file system in the cloud, you should expect the same dedupe levels for your backups in the cloud as you experience on premises.

How much data can I store in Cloud Backup?

A single Cloud Backup instance scales up to 115TB of usable data. As a result of data reduction from compression and deduplication, the amount of logical VM data stored in Cloud Backup is usually several times higher. You can use multiple Cloud Backup instances.

How many Cloud Backup instances can an on-premises DVX replicate to?

Similar to physical replication targets, an on-premises system can replicate to up to 10 Cloud Backup instances. The total maximum number of replication targets is also 10.

In which geographic regions can Cloud Backup be deployed?

What about AWS egress charges?

There is no cloud egress charge during regular operation. Cloud egress charges are incurred only when restoring from cloud backups and are minimized. Global Deduplication ensures that only data that is missing on premises is transferred from the cloud, which can dramatically reduce egress charges.

What is ControlShift?

ControlShift is a disaster recovery and mobility orchestration service offered by Datrium.

What can I do with ControlShift?

You can use ControlShift to design, test, and execute your disaster recovery plans. ControlShift supports flexible topologies for recovery using both on-premises and cloud backup sites as well as failover to on-premises and cloud target DR sites (when used as a part of Datrium DRaaS).

How is ControlShift different from existing disaster recovery orchestration software?

ControlShift is not a packaged software product. ControlShift is a SaaS offering – there is nothing to install or manage on premises. ControlShift infrastructure is entirely located in the public cloud and managed and supported by Datrium, so you can focus on designing and testing your DR plans instead of running third-party software.

What are the options for acquiring ControlShift, and what is the delivery mechanism?

ControlShift is a cloud service that can be acquired in two different ways:

  1. SaaS: ControlShift service executes in Datrium AWS infrastructure, and the customer gets a single bill from Datrium. ControlShift is also available to run in customer-managed AWS infrastructure, allowing you to benefit from your AWS EDP.
  2. DRaaS: ControlShift is packaged into Datrium DRaaS. This version of ControlShift is extended to support failover to a public target DR site. The customer gets a single bill from Datrium.
  3. Bring-Your-Own-Cloud (BYOC): ControlShift is deployed in a customer-provided AWS account. The customer is responsible for paying cloud infrastructure bills to the public cloud provider and ControlShift fees to Datrium.

What sort of orchestration features does ControlShift provide?

ControlShift provides all of the common DR orchestration features you would expect: orchestration workflows are expressed in terms of recovery step sequences to reflect application-level dependencies, the source and destination environments can be remapped via a set of translation rules (for datastores, folders, virtual networks, compute resources, etc), IP addresses can either be preserved or remapped via IP address mapping rules.

Third-party DR orchestration software generally does not include its own storage and does not work with backup solutions. Instead, third party DR products orchestrate data replication independently of existing backup processes, often relying on array-based replication. How is ControlShift different?

ControlShift is very different in that it manages both backup and DR orchestration in a unified way. Data is replicated only once in its native compressed and deduplicated form using storage level, forever incremental replication. The same backups are used for operational recovery (e.g., to restore a 6-month old file) and for disaster recovery (e.g., to restore the entire site).

Traditional DR solutions can recover only from the most recent recovery point or from just a few recent recovery points. How is ControlShift different?

ControlShift is very different. You can instantly recover from over a million recovery points going back months or even years. That's especially important for recovery from ransomware attacks that are often discovered months after the initial infection.

Can ControlShift provide DR for all of my data?

Absolutely. Because ControlShift operates at the storage level, your snapshots are instant and consistent whether or not your protection group has 1 VM or 5,000 VMs. Global Deduplication ensures that data transfer is minimized. Restoring a backup is instant, regardless of the data size. That's very different from standalone backup products that copy data into a primary storage system for recovery.

Does it work with VMware Cloud on AWS?

Yes, when offered as part of Datrium DRaaS, ControlShift can orchestrate recovery to VMware Cloud on AWS.

Does ControlShift work with backups stored in the public cloud?

Yes, ControlShift supports Cloud Backup sites and can orchestrate recovery from cloud backups to either on-premises or cloud recovery targets.

Does ControlShift support failback?

Yes, ControlShift supports failback to the protected site from both on-premises and cloud DR sites. Similar to failover, the failback operation is fully orchestrated.

Purchasing and Pricing

Can I buy everything from Datrium if I want a single vendor solution?

Yes, you can buy hosts, data nodes, support, and all the software subscriptions from Datrium as a packaged solution if you want to work with one vendor for infrastructure and support.

What is the term of Datrium software subscriptions?

You can purchase host and data node software subscriptions for as many years as you like. All Datrium subscriptions can be transferred to new hardware nodes and the cloud during the term of the subscription.

Can I decommission my SDDC to limit costs?

Yes, you can tear down your SDDC at any time via ControlShift UI. Please note that a new SDDC deployment can take about 90 minutes.

How do I buy DVX?

You buy DVX through a combination of host and data node software subscriptions along with associated hardware and support. You can use your existing hosts or buy industry-standard servers of your choice.

Do I need to establish my own AWS and VMC accounts and deal directly with AWS and VMware to subscribe to Datrium DRaaS?

No. Datrium DRaaS includes all required components. You don’t need to interact with any other vendors. You will get a single bill from Datrium, and Datrium will provide comprehensive support of all components, including AWS and VMware Cloud.

Do I need to purchase any other cloud service components to go with DRaaS like DRaaS Connect?

No, Datrium DRaaS includes all software and service components for cloud backup and disaster recovery to the public cloud. If you're protecting non-DVX on-premises sites, you can request a no-cost feature called DRaaS Connect for vSphere On Prem. If you're protecting a VMware Cloud on AWS production environment, you can request a no-cost feature called DRaaS Connect for VMware Cloud. DRaaS Connect will be available in Q2 2020.

What are the options for buying Cloud Backup and the delivery mechanism?

Cloud Backup is a cloud service that can be acquired in three different ways:
  1. SaaS: Most customers buy Datrium Cloud Backup as a service running on AWS and manage it through their DVX vCenter plugin.
  2. DRaaS: Cloud Backup is included as a component of Datrium DRaaS. The customer gets a single bill from Datrium for Cloud Backup, DR orchestration with Datrium ControlShift, and any use of VMware Cloud on AWS for testing and actual DR failovers.
  3. Bring-Your-Own-Cloud (BYOC): Cloud Backup is deployed into a customer-provided AWS account. The customer is responsible for paying cloud infrastructure bills to the public cloud provider and Cloud Backup fees to Datrium.

Do I install Cloud Backup software in AWS, or is it a SaaS model?

There is nothing to install. Cloud Backup is a fully managed cloud backup service. You just need to activate it, which you can do online in minutes.

How much does Cloud Backup cost?

Cloud Backup is priced on a pay-per-use model. You pay for the amount of data you store (by the terabyte) and for the time you store it (by the month). Please contact us for specific pricing details.

Do I need an AWS account to use ControlShift?

No, you do not need an AWS account to use ControlShift. It is a fully managed service from Datrium, so you just access it through your vCenter plugin without any cloud credentials.

What are the subscription terms for ControlShift?

You purchase ControlShift for the number of VMs or virtual desktops you want to protect and the number of years you want to protect them.

Support

How is the cloud service maintained and upgraded?

There is nothing to install, manage, or monitor in the cloud. Datrium Support performs the monitoring, maintenance, and upgrade of the services. These upgrades are performed with notifications ahead of time, like other enterprise SaaS services.

How do I get support from Datrium?

You purchase support for Datrium hardware when you buy the nodes, and software support is included in your software subscription.

Who do I call for support if I use my existing servers for hosts?

You call Datrium for host software support and your server vendor for host hardware support. If you want a single vendor for both, you can buy Datrium host hardware.

If my systems are attacked by ransomware, can Datrium Support help me?

You can always call Datrium Support for help, but you can also use the ransomware protection that's included with every Datrium product. You simply search your global catalog of backups for a point in time before your system was infected. Then, you can instantly restore all your VMs at the same time, and you're back up and running.

What is the support model for DRaaS?

DRaaS is offered as a cloud service with a single point of support. It includes DR Cloud Backup, on-demand SDDCs with VMware Cloud on AWS, and DR orchestration through ControlShift. These systems are monitored and maintained by Datrium Support.

Can I run DR testing and do a production failover at any time by myself, or do I need help from Datrium support?

Datrium DRaaS is designed for self-service. You can perform DR testing or a production failover at any time without contacting Datrium support. You can also request Datrium assistance at any time, especially when faced with a real disaster recovery event.

Do I call Datrium Support if my Cloud Backup isn’t working right?

At any time during your Cloud Backup subscription, you can call Datrium for support. Cloud Backup is a fully managed cloud backup service from Datrium, so if something isn’t working right, it’s our job to fix it.

Do I need to call Datrium Support to recover my data from Cloud Backup?

No, you don’t need to call Support to recover your data from the cloud. You would use the global search capability built into Automatrix to find the backup you want to recover. Then you would restart your VM using that backup, and Cloud Backup would move any missing data back from the cloud directly to the host running the VM. Global deduplication and forever-incremental backups minimize the data that needs to be copied back.

What type of support is offered with ControlShift?

Datrium supports the VMs included in the service for the term of the subscription.

Do I call Datrium to execute my ControlShift plans?

No, you execute your ControlShift plans yourself whenever you want to test or move workloads between sites and to the public cloud.

Do I call Datrium for ControlShift support?

Datrium supports all aspects of the ControlShift service, so you get everything you need from a single support call.
